New Year Celebrants Told to Bundle Up with Snow Predicted Across the UK

Forecasters have indicated a frosty beginning to the new year, with wintry precipitation anticipated throughout a lot of the UK. Celebrants have been told to wrap up as bitterly cold temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.

Festive Events Proceed Despite Warnings

The Scottish capital's renowned Hogmanay celebrations are set to go ahead, unlike last year's postponement. This comes despite weather alerts for snow across northern Scotland.

"A chilly New Year's Eve evening for those partying, so extra layers will be needed," said the Met Office.

Celebrations Under Mostly Clear but Frosty Skies

Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is set to be perfect for fireworks displays, with no rain and clear skies. The mercury are forecast to be chilly, meaning extra layers vital, said forecasters.

Further north, conditions will be cloudier, but this is unlikely to impact visibility for viewing fireworks. "It won't be low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster.

Widespread Advisories for New Year's Day

Moving into Friday, advisories are in place for Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, across parts of the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and the majority of the south-east of England.

  • Travel is anticipated to be impacted.
  • People have been urged to plan for delays for trips on the road.
  • Hold-ups and call-offs are likely on trains and buses.

The Mercury Forecast to Fall Further

As 2026 begins, it will be "chilly no matter where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. Conditions are forecast to fall even more as snowfall and high winds are likely to affect the north of the country.

Around 10cm of snow is expected to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, with up to 30cm on the top roads and uplands.

Public Health Alerts Released

At the same time, amber cold health alerts have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are due to continue until noon on 5 January, with the mercury forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Officials said this signified the weather could to cause significant impacts across medical and care provision. This includes a likely increase in the fatality numbers among vulnerable individuals or those 65 and older.

The message for all is clear: to celebrate the new year in security, preparing for winter conditions is utterly key.
