"Any idea when you're interviewing the band?" a message reads. "I wanted to ask if I can join as their newest bandmate."

There's just one problem: The author likewise longs to be the Haims' fourth member. Furthermore, we are not alone. A host of famous supporters have publicly begged for the position.

It's clear a special quality is happening. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana began their career performing shows at small eateries with their parents. Now they're multi-time Grammy Award contenders.

In the tradition of the greatest groups, they're a close gang. Their music videos repeatedly show them striding in sync down the streets of Los Angeles. In concert, they perform with such unfettered happiness you inevitably think, "I'd love to be a piece of that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that fans came up to us and said, 'After your show, I bought a guitar'," remarks Alana, the youngest of the sisters. "That is the biggest compliment. That is recognition in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can motivate others to form a group."

"So all gets an invitation to be the fourth part of the family."

Grammy Recognition

The group have called into a break, where they're taking a pause after an extensive tour in for their fourth album, I Quit.

They're currently celebrating the news it's been nominated for best rock album at the Grammys – with Haim the pioneering all-female band ever in consideration for the award.

"I tune into the lists every year, so it kind of feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is announced," explains Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this correctly or am I dreaming'?"

The importance of the accolade is deeply felt by the sisters.

"We deliberately set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a huge step," adds Alana. "However we're just thankful for the female artists that paved the way."

Emotional Upheaval and Candor

The album emerged from a phase of emotional upheaval. All three sisters were single, and the music captures that strange transitional period where you're glad to be free, but not entirely ready to start anew.

The lyrics detail departures and goodbyes. The sisters seek love, but not the specific love they've got. You can hear them working out in real life who they are becoming.

"I love description, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a slogan. You have to consciously practice blocking the noise and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Refinement of Sound

That recent resilience demanded a different sonic direction – more raw and direct than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that started with the drum sound.

"Percussion is such a detailed thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our book," jokes Alana. "I always say, our albums don't start until we find the ideal drum sound."

Experiences and Collective Humor

The trio's honesty fueled the album's marketing, where the sisters shared some of their personal misadventures.

A former partner broke up with Este over a health concern. Alana shared a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"Experiencing these breakups, you just feel like there's no hope," explains Alana. "So to be able to share those stories and hear others tell you more outrageous stories, it's incredible."

A Confident Path

You can clearly sense a change in the band. These days, Haim are more confident of their place in the music world.

They're major draws, with hit albums and an worldwide following.

But the sister act will consistently be their primary focus.

"My sisters and I have been playing music since I was little," says Alana. "It feels as if no other path that we were meant to do. And I'm really grateful we've reached this point and we're still kicking."
