2K Hires Apex Legends Developer to Revitalize Struggling Action Game Project Ethos

2K Games has welcomed a seasoned producer from the creators of Apex Legends to direct the development team at 31st Union, which is currently developing the anticipated third-person action-packed title known as Project Ethos.

Management Transition Follows Mixed Response

The new appointee takes on the role of studio head at 31st Union following the dismissal of previous head the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was reportedly let go due to the game's lackluster unveiling last autumn.

Recently, 2K president a key figure updated team members about this organizational change through an official communication, which highlighted that playtesting had indicated the need for a clearer game identity.

Ismailer expressed that the developers is now overhauling Project Ethos with a revised approach, aiming to address player expectations.

Trend of Strategic Recruitment

The news follows a comparable action taken by 2K Games in August, when they brought on Rod Fergusson from Blizzard to contribute to the BioShock studio Cloud Chamber.

Here is the full message from Ismailer's announcement:

Team—

I know you all just completed your meeting - I hope you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the good news. Previously I sent you all a message, I mentioned the following: “I am confident in this crew. You all are some of the most dedicated and talented developers we have had the chance to partner with - and we’re looking forward for that partnership to endure.”

With your dedication and flexibility, especially over the last year, you consistently demonstrate that.

The player input from last autumn’s Project ETHOS playtest was informative. It validated the potential of a roguelike shooter but indicated we still had improvements to make. It highlighted the need for a sharper vision.

It has been motivating to see how far you’ve progressed. You accepted the feedback to mind and revamped Project ETHOS with a revitalized direction - one that’s positioned to deliver on its potential to our audience.

Our confidence in Project ETHOS grows every day. To advance the outstanding development you’ve made, I am thrilled to introduce the new hire as the latest Lead of the team. After a period of talks, he officially joins us on next week.

Ben’s management and experience in the competitive gaming field is considerable, having spent the last 15 years developing and overseeing some of the most recognizable titles in gaming, including Call of Duty: Black Ops, and most recently, Apex Legends.

Let’s together in welcoming him soon. We are all excited to keep witnessing the evolution of Project ETHOS in the time to come.

The President

Experience of the Incoming Leader

The appointee currently serves in the role of senior developer and head of production at Respawn Entertainment for Apex Legends. Brinkman earlier was employed at major gaming companies in diverse production roles on the Call of Duty games, and, prior to that, had assignments at other industry leaders.

Game Details and Concept

Project Ethos was unveiled in last year in conjunction with a early access event. At the time, the developers described the game as a "no-cost, third-person perspective action-packed experience and an exciting evolution on the style."

"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Build your hero in live gameplay to suit your personal playstyle," the description states. "Face the rivals with new abilities, risks, and tests that evolve every session. Will you safely extract with your hard-earned loot? Or take a risk, risk it all, and trust your team can secure victory? The decision is in your hands."

The game lacks an announced release date or supported systems, but enthusiasts can anticipate more updates as creation continues.
